In the winter of 2005 when I decided to go out on my own, Hampton University was one of my first clients. Since then I’ve had the privilege of photographing some outstanding talent at Hampton. During last week’s MEAC Track and Field Championships held at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, North Carolina. One of Hampton’s former track stars was in attendance, which made me think of all the fun I had covering the Women’s Track Team these past few years. The first time I saw Francena McCorory she was a freshman and she was very late for her headshot. She was so late I was putting my camera equipment into my car about to head home. She simply said, “Oh, don’t worry about it…” and ran off into the night.
The very next year she was destroying everyone who lined up in the starting blocks next to her. Photographing track and field becomes a challenge sometimes to get isolation shots of individuals because of spacing. Francena made that easy because she was always way out in front. Last year when she told me on Facebook she was turning pro I thanked her for making my job easy. If you haven’t heard of Francena by now you should start following her because she is one of the new young talents and hopefuls in the Women’s 400 Meter Dash for the 2012 Olympics in London, England.
Here are a few images of Francena during her dominating years at Hampton. Hope you enjoy. You can also check her out on Facebook by clicking HERE.
